Advertisers Criticize Google’s PMax & Power Pair Push
California: The internal emails from Google are revealed and they shine some light on the advertiser’s dissatisfaction with the tech giant’s push for its “Power Pair” campaign. The campaign combining broad match keywords with Performance Max (PMax) was part of the overall Google efforts to encourage the advertisers to embrace fully automated solutions.
The leaked correspondence, between Google’s key executives, tells that not all advertisers were willing to follow automation-based strategy. In spite of a solid public image of PMax as an important plank in the Google advertising strategy, internal discussions reveal great concerns about its acceptance.
“There was a bit of real frustration that Google is not listening and promoting ‘full auto’ solutions they don’t want”, one executive wrote. And Muralidharan’s words were ringing with similar sentiments, as some advertisers seem to be tolerating PMax, but few were really excited. “Anecdotally, nobody was that excited about PMax in my advertiser conversations on the day,” he added.
The now-infamous “Power Pair” cheer led by executive Sylvanus Bent III was a calculated attempt to fix Google’s automation narrative. However, the internal backwash suggests a potential mismatch between Google’s product vision and those of the advertiser expectations.
As Google prepares to hold its Marketing Live and I/O events in 2025, these revelations might force the firm to change. Advertisers have long asked for the control and transparency, features such as negative keyword capabilities, targeting devices, and deep reporting.
Though the direction that Google will take is still uncertain, the inner debate hints at a possibility of re-examination. Understanding how advertisers feel and providing them with more nimble tools could be a key for building trust and increasing PMax adoption in the future.
